Andrew Solt

Rock and roll director.

Imagine: John Lennon--The Definitive Film Portrait (1988) -- The movie is plenty interesting, and even good, but calling it "the definitive film portrait" is sort of overselling it since ultimately this is a grim and dismal movie, focusing on the not-too-jolly aspects of John Lennon. Here he's presented as an almost completely political figure who's embarassed by his whimsical Beatles past. Some of it is John's fault, of course, but it seems more that this is what the director is interested in: giving the movie focus, but a gloomy one... right up until John is murdered as a grand finale. Rough-going, but still worth seeing for Lennon fans. B
