Anthony Minghella

Director of The English Patient and other lush stuff.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) -- A movie that's good in an almost old-fashioned way, and laced with interesting amounts of confusion.  Matt Damon does a good job, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman steals the show with his snobby character who, in some ways, is the moral center of the movie. B

Play (2000) -- A short movie based on the Beckett play where Alan Rickman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Juliet Stevenson sit with their heads in pots and their faces covered with some kind of crusty green mud, reciting -- very quickly -- the same dialogue over and over, about three times (though more often is implied).  Their deliveries and nuances keep the thing more interesting than it would seem from this description.
