Ben Folds Five (1995) -- Pretty refreshing stuff in the middle of the sometimes-gloomy 90s. Ben Folds is the first person to out-rock Jerry Lee Lewis on the piano, and the other players fit with him great. Every song is pretty remarkable, and they tend to get better the more you listen to them. "Philosophy" is the standout and will probably never get old. B

Whatever and Ever Amen (1997) -- The one with "Brick." It has a lot of the same fun and goodness of the first one. B

The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner (1999) -- The last album by the trio and feels closer to what Ben Folds would do on his solo album.  There's a lot of drama and spectacle to the album, which works. B
