His previous jobs before becoming a professor of English include working as a newspaper freelancer, being a writing tutor, working in the English department office, throwing furniture in 110 degree warehouses, talking to angry people on the phone, babysitting, working in an all-girls' dormitory, being a hi-tech card catalog computer person, hanging out with teenagers on the beach, being a lo-tech CAD computer person, and throwing more furniture... mostly chairs.
